He is known as one of Batman's oldest and most persistent enemies. Artist Bob Kane and Bill Finger introduced him in Detective Comics # 58 (December 1941) .1 The Penguin is a short, stocky man, known for his love of birds and his specialized high-tech umbrellas. As a mobster and thief, he is better known as the crime lord; his nightclub business provides cover for criminal activity, and Batman frequently uses him as a source of information about the criminal underworld. According to Bob Kane, the character was inspired by the then mascot of a cigarette advertisement Kool - a penguin with a top hat and cane. Finger believed that the image of high society gentlemen in tuxedos was reminiscent of emperor penguins.2
