Even though it stands across Michigan Avenue from the iconic Hancock Center, the Park Tower holds its own against its magnificent neighbor. This pottery-colored shard embodies everything that is quintessentially the Magnificent Mile: Pencil-thin, expertly manicured, dripping in luxury, and reaching for the stars. The John Hancock Center isn't particularly welcoming to its new neighbor, however. The massive slab across the street bounces winds coming off Lake Michigan right into this tower. As a result, the northern and southern walls of the building have extra reinforcement, and a mass dampener is strategically located in the top of the building. This building is most often noted for its luxury hotel, the Park Hyatt. It's worth noting that this building replaced an older hotel on the same site, which bore the same name. The old hotel occupied the entire 16-story building, whereas the new hotel occupies just 15 stories of the 70-story structure. Although the Park Tower is undoubtedly a landmark among modern skyscrapers, it was built without obliterating history. It occupies the location of the 1907 Perkins, Fellows & Hamilton Office and Studio. The facade of that building was preserved, and the Park Tower was constructed 40 feet back so that the old facade appears as if it's a standalone structure.
