What Is Shown? A coffin (plural, coffins) is a box-like funeral receptacle for a body, most commonly carved in wood, and usually placed above ground, though it may also be buried. The word "coffin" comes from the Latin corpus meaning "body", and fere meaning "to bear", hence coffin means "body-bearer"; from the phrase lignum mortuum (lignum mortuum). Since lignum is Latin for "wood", lignum mortuum means, "dead wood". The word also came to refer to a particular kind of wood that was thought to decay the body of corpses trapped within it.
