The Old Drunkard

The Old Drunkard

myminifactory

This is a meticulously restored plaster copy of a Hellenistic original proudly displayed at The Glyptotek in Munich. Despite the Greek original being long gone, another version of the same (meticulously restored) sculpture remains on permanent display at The Capitoline Museum in Rome. The statue of the Old Drunkard was created during the Hellenistic period, but the exact time of its creation cannot be pinpointed with certainty. In scholarly circles, the Old Drunkard is generally dated to the late third century BC based on stylistic parallels. The bulky, blocky composition and pyramidal structure bear a striking resemblance to the Scythians of the Marsyas Flayer Group, which dates back to the first half of the second century BC, as well as the figure of the Goose strangler, dated to the middle or later third century BC.
