The Niña, one of three Spanish ships used by explorer Christopher Columbus on his first voyage to the West Indies in 1492, was a caravel-type vessel that bore the name of Santa Clara but was commonly known as La Niña. Owned by Juan Niño of Moguer, it was Columbus's favorite ship and underwent rigging changes at the Azores for better ocean performance. Although specific details about its design are unclear, Michele de Cuneo mentioned that the Niña was around 60 tons, which may indicate a medium-sized caravel of approximately 50 feet in length. Originally lateen sail rigged, it was later re-rigged as caravela redonda with square sails. Despite its size, it played a significant role in Columbus's historic voyage.
