The Adaptive Tool \n\n “The Adaptive Tool”, is a device originally designed to assist with hammering nails into an object. We created this tool to help individuals who have limited or no use of their fingers, are suffering from severe arthritis, or experience Parkinson's tremors. Our design process took many directions, but we discovered that this particular design had multi-functional uses. For example, it can aid in placing a credit card into an ATM, picking up small objects, or holding a small object in place. Our initial inspiration came from our Engineering teacher who had an amputated thumb and found fiddly tasks quite difficult to accomplish. Mr. Knight told us that holding a nail and hammering it into an object was challenging and often frustrating as it was something he had to do regularly. As the creators of “The Adaptive Tool”, Nima Yahyaabady (Year 7) and I, Aidan Mansell (Year 9), put our heads together and designed a simple and cost-effective solution to Mr. Knight’s problem. Our primary objective in entering this competition was to invent an object that could make people's daily tasks easier. Along the way, we learned about the complexity of design and functionality, and with every hurdle, we grew more decisive in our task. We hope that you find “The Adaptive Tool” to be an adaptive device that can be used effectively, making tasks that some of us might take for granted a bit easier for people who struggle.
