The Mummy of Titos Flavios Demetrios in Ipswich Museum, UK
myminifactory
Titos Flavios Demetrios lived in Egypt roughly 2000 years ago during the Roman Empire's rule over the Nile Valley. Born about 400 years after his Greek ancestors settled in Egypt following Alexander the Great's conquest, he was a wealthy man. His three names reveal that he was also a Roman citizen. We do not know why he received citizenship since it is unlikely he ever visited Rome but it made him one of the most important men living in his town of Hawara in central Egypt. He may have been a Roman citizen and had Greek ancestry, yet Titus Flavius Demetrius died as an Egyptian, believing he would live in the afterlife with Osiris and other gods. His body was mummified, and an incredible mask made from layers of linen and plaster covered with gold was placed over his face. This object is part of "Scan The World".
