The monument of Kubrat, khan of the Bulgars, tells an epic story. Discovered in 1912 in Mala Pereshchepina (20 km from Poltava, Ukraine), it was a boy shepherd who stumbled upon a golden vessel and literally fell into what is believed to be the grave of Kuvrat, founder of Great Bulgaria and father of Asparuh, the founder of the First Bulgarian Empire. Archaeologists initially extracted the hoard under Count Aleksey Bobrinsky's supervision in 1914, after it was first described by Makarenko. Even though a clear connection exists between Kuvrat and the treasure trove (see below), controversy surrounds its true nature - is it a grave or simply a rich treasure chest? Since no human remains have been reported and there's a lack of definitive funeral device evidence, experts can't quite put their finger on it. Today, more than 800 incredible artifacts remain in the Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg. The hoard consists of stunning silver vessels (19 pieces) and exquisite gold treasures (16 items), featuring a magnificent rhyton, striking with its elegance and remains of another one to showcase its original grandeur.
