In September 1666 a fire ravaged London for 3 days leveling thousands of structures. A tribute to the inferno, dubbed "The Monument" by Londoners, was constructed just one block from this year's 3D print display site, precisely 348 years after the blaze was extinguished. I'll be missing out on attending the show this year, but if you make it, you can ascend the 311 stairs inside the tower on a cantilevered staircase to reach the observation deck. Alternatively, you could simply generate one and study it ;)\nThe architects behind the rebuilding effort decided to establish a lasting commemoration of the Great Fire near its starting point. Sir Christopher Wren, Chief Architect for King Charles II and designer of St. Paul's Cathedral, and his colleague Dr Robert Hooke devised a plan for an imposing Doric column inspired by ancient styles. They created blueprints for a colossal pillar containing a cantilevered stone staircase of 311 steps leading to an observation platform. Atop this structure stands a drum supporting a copper urn from which flames burst forth, representing the Great Fire. The Monument, as it has come to be known, measures 61 metres in height (202 feet) - precisely the distance separating it from the site in Pudding Lane where the blaze began.
