Mitochondria are organelles bound by two membranes and found in nearly all eukaryotic organisms, including those that live in water or on land. While cells within some multi-cellular life forms have no mitochondria at all, such as the red blood cells of mature mammals, many other single-celled creatures lack these structures entirely. For example, certain types of microorganisms called diplomonads and parabasalids don't have much use for their mitochondria anymore. Some organisms like Monocercomonoides even abandoned theirs altogether long ago. The name "mitochondrion" comes from Greek words meaning thread or string and grain-like structure. Mitochondria are also the powerhouse of cells, producing most of the energy that fuels life through a molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
