The Meeting between General Gobert and The Rebel Leader Pélage in Guadaloupe 1808
myminifactory
This is part of a set of two reliefs by Pierre Jean David, also known as David d'Angers, showcasing the Meeting between General Gobert and Rebel Leader Pélage in Guadaloupe back in 1808. The other relief can be downloaded from here. Both artists, David d'Angers and Daumier, were not only creative forces to be reckoned with but also vocal opponents of the monarchy, and their art reflects this ideological conviction. While Daumier is most famous for his biting political satire drawings, he was also an accomplished sculptor. The "emigrants" in question refer specifically to deported prisoners and refugees who found themselves displaced after the 1848 revolution. The hasty, faceless expressions seen in both works effectively convey a sense of desperation and anonymity.
