Cosmo Wenman's laser scanning of Skulpturhalle Basel's plaster cast of the Medusa Rondanini, a possible fifth-century BC work and oldest-known "beautiful gorgoneion" sculpture, reveals the influence of a gilded bronze aegis believed to have been housed in the Acropolis. The Medusa Rondanini features an idealized likeness of Athena of Velletri, adorned with snakes and owl wings, symbolizing a unique blend of Chthonic dread and Olympian beauty. This ancient work was first brought to the attention of Northern European art connoisseurs by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in the 1780s. The laser-scanned model, captured at Skulpturhalle Basel with FARO Edge Arm equipment, has been made available online through Autodesk's Reality Capture sponsorship.
