The Mazzocchi Horse

The majestic horse was painstakingly reconstructed through royal efforts from an astonishing array of bronze fragments unearthed in 1739 at the ancient site of Ercolano. The skilled writer Alessio Simmaco Mazzocchi from Capua proudly inscribed his name on the pedestal as the masterpiece took center stage in the courtyard of the Museo Ercolanese. Meanwhile, the renowned German art historian and archaeologist Winckelmann caught sight of it in Portici and immortalized its grandeur in a letter to Count von Bruhl in 1762.
