In the Second Age of Middle-earth, powerful Rings of Power are given to the lords of Elves, Dwarves, and Men. Unaware of their danger, Sauron secretly forges the One Ring in Mount Doom, imbuing it with a massive portion of his dominating power. This allows him to control the other Rings from afar, paving the way for Middle-earth's conquest. A final coalition of men and elves launches a fierce battle against Sauron's forces in Mordor, where Prince Isildur of Gondor severs Sauron's finger along with the Ring, effectively destroying his physical form. With Sauron's first downfall, the Third Age of Middle-earth begins. However, the Ring's corrupting influence soon takes hold of Isildur, who instead of destroying it, decides to claim the Ring for himself. Tragically, Isildur is later killed by Orcs, and the Ring remains lost for 2,500 years until it is discovered by Gollum, who possesses it for five centuries. The Ring then falls into the possession of a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins.
