Created for the Pièce d'Eau des Nappes park at Marly, this work is paired with "The Seine and the Marne" by Nicolas Coustou and sculptures depicting rivers by Anselme Flamen and Simon Hurtrelle. The original plaster cast was produced in 1699; later, a marble version emerged between 1703 and 1707 as indicated on its surface. In 1719, the group was relocated to the west pond of the Tuileries gardens.
