The little arch of Galerius

This magnificent arch was carved from a single block of marble, specifically designed as "the little arch of Galerius". It serves as the crowning glory of a small palace temple, featuring an intricate central motif that showcases two medals adorned with busts, skillfully held by two youthful Easterners. The right medal proudly displays Galerius in his formal military regalia, while the left one beautifully depicts his wife, Augusta Galeria Valeria. Following her tragic demise, her likeness was reimagined as a deity, possibly the Tyche (Fortuna) of Thessaloniki, symbolized by her tower-like crown. Winged Cupids grasp garlands between the medals, adding an air of elegance to this masterpiece. Along the arch's sides, the god Pan is depicted alongside a Nymph, while on the intrados, we find Dionysus rendered on a medal in exquisite detail. This exceptional piece originates from the skilled artisans working at an Imperial workshop in Thessaloniki.
