My rendition of Link's sword in the reboot of The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening. The sword was crafted based on 2 reference pictures, and I had already created the model before the game's release. Size: I estimated the size of the sword based on the reference images. When printed to scale, the entire sword measures approximately 54cm in length. To accommodate as much detail as possible within a single printbed (in my case, the Prusa MK3S), I broke the model down into multiple pieces. Weight: The printed sword is relatively lightweight. To add some weight and realism to the prop, I designed the handle to be fillable with plaster. The pommel seals the handle, concealing any evidence of a seam. Once filled and fully hardened, the plaster imparts a balanced feel to the sword. Assembly: Each piece is carefully crafted to fit together seamlessly. Simply apply a small amount of super glue or epoxy, and everything should remain in place without issue. Two pegs have been added to connect the two blade pieces. To ensure proper assembly, make sure to follow the correct order: attach the blade guard around the blade in the correct orientation before gluing it into the handle. Finish: For the finish, I opted for a weathered and rusted look, which contrasts nicely with the game's cartoony aesthetic. Since the sword is washed ashore in the game, I added a rusted appearance and some oxidation to the model. To complete the sword, I created a resin replica of the pommel gem using a 3D file. I dyed the resin with red acrylic paint until achieving the desired color and then poured it into a plaster mold. After sanding the gem smooth with a power drill, I weathered its edges to give the illusion that it had been in the blade for an extended period. Print Settings: The sword was printed using PLA, and I estimate the infill was around 25%. Feel free to adjust this setting to your liking. Supports were only used for the handle. The files are named for easy assembly, making it a straightforward process.
