The Lamentation of Christ c1500AD (50.96)
sketchfab
This intricately crafted wood carving from Southern Germany brings to life the poignant moment of Christ's Lamentation, a pivotal scene in the Passion story where Christ's loved ones mourn his crucified body according to the Gospels. Christ's upper torso and head are supported by St John, his devoted disciple, as the crown of thorns lies discarded on the ground, one of the instruments of Christ's suffering. The Virgin Mary tenderly holds Christ's limp arm with her left hand, while raising a corner of her veil with her right to catch her tears. Nearby, St Mary Magdalene kneels in quiet reverence, dressed in attire typical of the time period and clutching her attribute, an ointment jar. This theme was widely depicted in late medieval art and devotion, inviting viewers to connect emotionally with Christ's mortal form and reflect on his selfless sacrifice for humanity. The carved group may have originally been part of a larger ensemble, possibly an altarpiece.
