In 1947, Thor Heyerdahl, a Norwegian explorer and author, embarked on an expedition across the Pacific Ocean in a raft from South America to Polynesia. Named "Kon-Tiki" after the Inca sun god Viracocha's old name, this journey demonstrated Heyerdahl's book of the same title which recounted the adventure.
