Depicted is a romantic couple within the sculpture, that was initially part of larger sculptures on Rodin's The Gates of Hell portal in Paris. They were then later relocated from The Gate of Hell and swapped for another pair on the right-hand column. Rodin named his initial title of this model as Francesca Da Rimini when it was commissioned to tell the tragic tale from Dante's Inferno, (Canto 5 Circle two), when an Italian Noblewoman called Fransica falls in love with her step brother after hearing their famous forbidden tale. However Critics did notice and agreed to rename the name of The model Le Baiser at display by 1887. In response, August Rodin said that he admired not only Women but admired their very physical bodies as strong and beautiful figures within sculpture as full partner for men's passion which sparked much controversy of love, lust & love making among many at display on show. Rodin then had The sculpture moved in to Chicago with world fair and after viewing from the inside he had his new art taken down.
