Operated by Sita, the incinerator plays a vital role in Kirklees Council's waste strategy and Unitary Development plan, handling 136,000 tons of municipal waste generated locally each year. Since opening its doors in 2002, this pioneering facility was among the first to rely on Private Finance Initiative funding in the United Kingdom. Staffed by 29 employees, operating around-the-clock for 24 hours a day, the plant cost £35 million to build. As with numerous other incinerators across the country, the facility has faced substantial local resistance and protests over the years. Leaks of combustible gases detected in September 2006 raised even greater safety concerns within the community.
