The Inner Voice or Meditation

Rodin revived Meditation's figure, a tormented woman, in The Gates of Hell, for his monumental tribute to Victor Hugo. In 1895, he freed the figure from the monument, magnifying its size threefold and renaming it Inner Voice. Rodin proudly showcased remnants of his working process, preserving mold seamlines throughout. In other iterations, he even retained the severed knee that had been damaged when the figure was separated from the Monument. He unveiled the work in a seemingly unfinished state at the Salon in 1896, declaring: "The study of Nature is complete, and I have made every effort to render art as complete as possible."
