The impossible dovetail puzzle box
thingiverse
The dovetail puzzle box requires an extremely precise printer to achieve its 0.15mm clearance between two pieces. This tight tolerance ensures the steel ball, responsible for the locking mechanism, remains invisible. Initially, I created a model with 0.3mm clearance for easier assembly, but this design compromise resulted in visible steel balls when viewing directly into the spacing, severely impacting the puzzle's intricacy. To successfully print the magnet, which must be placed at an exact 4.68mm z-height, you should include the M0 command before this line or manually pause the printer and insert the magnet while it's still printing. Be prepared for a potentially lengthy wait as the infill is printed, or simply slow down the print process. To complete the puzzle box, you will need: * An 11mm steel ball * An 8x3 neodymium magnet Caution: The nozzle material is often magnetic, so it may attract the magnets. To prevent this, make sure to insert the magnet through a hole with an 8.3mm diameter. In my case, I had to apply some force to push the magnet into place, which ultimately prevented the nozzle from attracting it. If you find that the magnet holes become too large and fail to hold the magnet securely in place, consider applying a small amount of hot glue to secure the magnet during printing.
