Commissioned as a tomb statue, it was crafted by renowned Belgian sculptor Paul de Vigne (1843-1901), who honed his skills under the guidance of his father, an accomplished statuary. De Vigne's early work gained recognition when he showcased his Fra Angeico da Fiesole at the prestigious Ghent Salon in 1868.
