The Ignioc Stone, St Clement, Cornwall
sketchfab
A swift upload of this remarkable inscribed stone in Cornwall reveals its impressive stature, measuring 2.26 meters high with lettering ranging from 6cm to 14cm in height. Macalister initially believed it contained an ogham inscription, yet despite visible linear markings on the left-hand (west) side, they fail to exhibit a discernible pattern, aside from a lightly incised cross “+”. The inscription proudly declares IGNIOC VITALI FILI TORRICI, translating to "Ignioc. [This stone] of Vitalus, son of Torricus", with some speculating that the name "Ignioc" was added later, evident in its differing style featuring an insular form of "G" and another insular "N". The remainder of the inscription is written exclusively in capital letters. The horizontal "I" in VITALI suggests a date between the 6th-8th centuries AD. It's conceivable that this stone was originally intended as a standing monument, later repurposed to commemorate Christian values.
