Toni Stadler was a son of landscape painter Anton Stadler and a student of August Gaul in Berlin. From 1906 he studied at the School of Applied Arts in Munich, and from 1909 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. His teachers were Hermann Hahn and, starting in 1927, Aristide Maillol in Paris. Between 1914 and 1918, Toni Stadler served in the military. In 1925 he married Hedda von Kaulbach, daughter of painter Friedrich August von Kaulbach, after a 40-year relationship with Priska von Martin, an artist. During his stay in Florence in 1938, Toni Stadler met Hans Purrmann and formed an intense friendship. On July 16, 1939, during the celebrations of the "Day of German Art" and the opening of the Great German Art Exhibition in Munich, Adolf Hitler awarded him a professor title not connected to any office or income. In 1942 he received a full professorship at the Städel School in Frankfurt am Main. From 1946 to 1958 Toni Stadler was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and in 1953 became Vice-President there. He took part in documenta I (1955), Documenta II (1959) and documenta III in 1964 in Kassel. This object is part of "Scan The World".
