This sculpture showcases the craftsmanship of French sculptor Henri Chapu, born on September 30, 1833, in Le Mée-sur-Seine. Initially training as a tapestry maker at the École Gratuite de Dessin, Chapu's artistic talents soon led him to the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he honed his skills under James Pradier, François Duret, and Léon Cogniet. In 1849, Chapu's exceptional abilities earned him a spot among the esteemed pupils at the École, while in 1855, he took home the coveted Prix de Rome for sculpture with his relief "Cleobis and Biton." Completing his education at the Académie de France in Rome from 1861, Chapu worked tirelessly in the Villa Médicis. Throughout the Second Empire and Third Republic periods, Chapu left an indelible mark on architectural landmarks by creating elaborate sculptural decorations for structures like Au Printemps, Théâtre de l'Opéra, and Château de Chantilly's gardens. A master of his craft, Chapu pioneered a new wave of interest in médallions, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the art world.
