The Guatemalan woodcarving, shaped in honor of Kukulkan, one of the Mayan mythology's most revered ancient deities, takes center stage as a feathered serpent. Quetzal, the revered national symbol of Guatemala, perches atop this carving, exuding freedom and independence. As a sacred bird, the quetzal was deeply respected by the ancient Indians. In souvenir shops across Central America, particularly around Lake Atitlan, you can find masks like this one waiting to take home. I received this very mask from my close friend Alex. According to local belief, such a mask serves as a guardian, shielding the house from trouble.
