The Green Iguana

The green iguana, also known as Teyú or Iguana iguana, is a massive arboreal lizard that calls Central and South America home. It roams freely from Mexico's northern regions down to Argentina's southern tip, Brazil's southern borders, Paraguay, the Caribbean Islands, and Florida's shores. Measuring up to 2 meters in length from snout to tail, these lizards can weigh a substantial 15 kilograms or more. Iguana populations have taken a significant hit across their entire distribution range - from Sinaloa and Veracruz in Mexico to Brazil and Paraguay - primarily due to unbridled hunting and the steady destruction of their habitats. In Colombia, they're hunted for their eggs, which are then sold as street food. This practice has been outlawed due to the risk of wiping out the species entirely within the country's borders.
