sketchfab
The Shigir Idol discovered in 1890 during a gold mining operation at the Shigirpeat bog is the oldest known wooden sculpture. In 2014, a team of archaeologists and scientists from Russia and Germany conducted an extensive study of the idol. The original sculpture was 5.3 meters high; however, only 3.4 meters remain intact. When considering images of the lost section, eight figures are depicted on the Great Shigir Idol. It was determined that the idol was carved from a freshly cut tree trunk using polished stone adzes and chisels. Initially, the sculpture stood upright, likely on a stone foundation, before falling into the lake and sinking in its shallow end during peat formation, with some of this ancient material preserved in its cracks. According to AMS results combined with other available data, the idol is estimated to be approximately 9,600-9,000 years old, corresponding to the beginning of the Mesolithic period.
