The Great Shigir Idol is discovered in 1890 during a gold mining operation at the Shigirpeat bog and stands as the oldest known monumental wooden sculpture. In 2014, Russian and German archaeologists team up with scientists to study the idol comprehensively. The original sculpture measures 5.3 meters high, while its surviving part tops out at 3.4 meters tall. A total of eight personages are represented on the Great Shigir Idol when you factor in images from the lost part. Analysis reveals that the idol was crafted from a freshly cut tree trunk using polished stone adzes and chisels. Initially positioned vertically, likely on a stone foundation, the sculpture falls into the lake and sinks into its shallow end as peat formation occurs, some of which remains preserved in ancient cracks. The AMS results, paired with other available data, pinpoint the idol's age at approximately 9,600-9,000 years ago, coinciding with the onset of the Mesolithic era.
