The Great Shigir Idol is the oldest known monumental wooden sculpture, discovered in 1890 during a gold mining operation at the Shigirpeat bog. In 2014, a team of Russian and German archaeologists and scientists conducted an extensive study of the idol. The original sculpture stood at 5.3 meters tall; however, only 3.4 meters remain intact. Together with images from its lost sections, eight personages were depicted on the Great Shigir Idol. Researchers established that it was crafted from a freshly cut tree trunk using polished stone adzes and chisels. Initially positioned vertically, likely on a stone foundation, the sculpture fell into the lake and sank in its shallow area during peat formation. Some of this ancient peat has been preserved within its cracks. According to AMS results combined with other available data, the idol is approximately 9,600–9,000 years old, corresponding to the beginning of the Mesolithic era.
