The Shigir Idol, discovered in 1890 during a gold mining operation at the Shigirpeat bog, is the oldest known monumental wooden sculpture ever found. In 2014, Russian and German archaeologists and scientists launched an extensive study of this iconic idol. Measuring 5.3 meters tall initially, the surviving part stands at 3.4 meters high, showcasing eight personages when combined with images from the missing sections. The analysis revealed that skilled craftsmen made the idol using freshly cut tree trunks and polished stone tools, such as adzes and chisels. Initially standing vertically on a stone foundation, it likely fell into the lake during peat formation, where some of the ancient cracks preserved its remains. According to AMS results and other data available, the Shigir Idol is estimated to be around 9,600-9,000 years old, dating back to the early Mesolithic period.
