The Great Shigir Idol, unearthed in 1890 during a gold mining operation at the Shigirpeat bog, stands as the oldest known monumental wooden sculpture. In 2014, archaeologists and scientists from Russia and Germany collaborated on an exhaustive study of this ancient icon. Originally 5.3 meters tall, only 3.4 meters remain of the sculpture. Eight distinct figures were rendered on the Great Shigir Idol, as evidenced by images recovered from the lost portion. Analysis revealed that a freshly cut tree trunk was skillfully shaped with polished stone adzes and chisels. Initially positioned upright, probably atop a stone foundation, the idol toppled into a lake and sank in its shallow waters during peat formation, some of which remains preserved within ancient cracks. According to AMS results and other available data, the Great Shigir Idol is estimated to be approximately 9,600-9,000 years old, coinciding with the onset of the Mesolithic era.
