In Morocco, Gnawa people - descendants from sub-Saharan Africa - engage in trance sessions led by master musicians, clairvoyants, mediums, and followers. Their primary instrument is the goumbri, a three-stringed lute-drum. Hours-long trances are induced through hypnotic rhythms and sounds. Women perform guedra, a southern dance characterized by convulsions, while men leap high during their dance. The gnawa have innovatively combined dikr (Allah invocations) with madh (praise songs) to create a unique mystico-religious musical genre.
