The Globe

The Globe

Today is the day I finally present you my latest project I’ve been working on since the last 7 months: My vision of the #famous Rubik’s Cube that I love to call: The Globe! Because you know that “Rubik’s ball” was not very clear… But why would I recreate something that already exists? Sometimes I look for strange cubes that are working in a specific way but I couldn’t find a 3x3x3 sphere that looks cool. So, I made one all by myself ! For this project, I used SolidWorks, my Anycubic I3 Mega S FFF 3D Printer to make the colored tiles and a resin 3D printer I bought for the Worldskills, the Creality LD-002H to make everything else. When I started this project, I made an entirely prototype in PLA. It was working well and was a bit too loose. Then, I made a second and lastly a third version of the “core” to get a nice and precise tightening with the screws. I had springs so the “center” pieces push the “edge” pieces to reduce the looseness. Now that the The Globe mk2 is finished, I’ve noted what will be nice to improve for a mk3: - My springs are too hard, that makes the system too tight. I need to get lighter springs, and get countersunk head screws to avoid an unalignment of the center pieces. - My core needs to get it arms a bit longer to touch the center. It will help for the alignment. - The moving pieces need a bigger fillet on their edges to reduce the friction surface and to guide faces that are not well aligned. The older cubes had these problems too and I’ve forgotten it. - The Globe will need to be entirely dismountable, especially the tiles because they are glued together. I was thinking of clips maybe. - To print easily, I would like to get a flat bottom on my tiles. Same on the moving pieces. - The tiles could be printed all in one with a double extruder FFF printer. (Could be printed with a multicolor printer like in the Bambulab AMS technology.) During this project, I had hard times to focus on, I almost forgot about this idea. Talking about the problems I was facing on it was most of the times great, people always had a fresh look.
