The Gherkin is a towering skyscraper located in London's central financial hub, the City of London. Constructed in December 2003, it opened its doors to the public in April 2004. At an impressive height of 41 storeys, this building stands at a staggering 180 metres (591 feet) tall, occupying the site where the historic Baltic Exchange once stood. The Baltic Exchange was severely damaged by a bomb blast in 1992, orchestrated by the Provisional IRA in St Mary Axe, which is also the name of the street where the tower proudly resides.
