The Fountain of Bacchus

The Fountain of Bacchus, also known as Fontana del Bacchino or Fontanella del Nano Morgante, stands tall in Florence's Boboli Gardens near the Pitti Palace. The massive marble sculpture measures 116cm high and showcases a drunken court dwarf named Braccio di Bartolo riding a turtle dressed as Bacchus. Water sprays from the turtle's mouth into a nearby basin below the sculpture. Sculptor Valerio Cioli created this masterpiece in 1560 for Cosimo I de' Medici, who adored Braccio di Bartolo. The artwork is a prime example of grotesque style, popular during the Renaissance period. It features monstrous or misshapen subjects with refined details to contrast with idyllic Renaissance style. The original sculpture was relocated inside the Pitti Palace, while its cast remains on display where the original once stood.
