The Forbidden City, spanning 600 years of history, was constructed between 1406 and 1420 for Ming and Qing Dynasty emperors. This historic palace now serves as the Palace Museum, open to the public since its establishment by the State Council in 1961. The UNESCO World Heritage Site covers an area of approximately 72 hectares (180 acres) and includes a 10-meter high city wall surrounding 9,999 rooms within. A moat, 52 meters wide, surrounds the outer perimeter of this 'city within a city.' The structures are primarily wooden with white stone foundations and yellow glazed tiles, adorned by colorful wall paintings. A south-to-north axis line divides the complex in half, giving it an imposing yet stately appearance.
