The Faun
myminifactory
A legendary creature of ancient myth was the faun, a half-human, half-goat figure that served as a shepherd. In frenzied abandon, the fauns enthusiastically followed the wine deity Bacchus. At first glance, Sergel's sculpture appears to be a straightforward representation of human form, but upon closer inspection, a small goat tail can be seen at the base of the spine. This Faun statue marked a turning point in Sergel's career and was crafted during his time in Rome. It was created in duplicate versions, with this particular piece becoming part of Gustav III's collection.
