This park was constructed in 1875 on the site of an earlier Dutch citadel located within Ghent. The land was purchased by Charles de Kerchove de Denterghem, who at that time held the position of Mayor, during the period spanning from 1870 to 1871. One of the largest and most modern fortifications in Europe at its inception, the citadel later served as barracks for infantry and artillery units until its operational closure in 1870. The park underwent significant redevelopment in 1913, with structures erected to accommodate the Great Exhibition of that year. In 1930, the park's appearance was altered once more in celebration of Belgium's centennial independence anniversary. A bunker was constructed beneath the park in 1938, situated adjacent to the Leopold barracks, as a precautionary measure preceding World War II; however, it remained unfinished at the time of Germany's invasion. Since 1984, this protected landscape has been safeguarded. During its construction, existing natural slopes and remnants from the old citadel were utilized. Scattered throughout the park are fragments of meticulously demolished bunkers. The site boasts an impressive collection of 780 trees, including rare species, which adds to its allure. The university's botanical garden and campus Training facilities are situated on the outskirts of Citadel Park.
