The Drinker

A visionary self-taught sculptor, Arturo Martini, cultivated an intense passion for clay's expressive qualities from childhood, fueled by his hands-on experience in a ceramic factory. This early fascination profoundly shaped all subsequent creations, which were later refined during a formative study stint in Paris and upon returning to Italy. There, he became closely associated with the influential Novecento group and the esteemed magazine "Valori Plastici". The Drinker (Il bevitore), a stunning sculptural piece, masterfully captures a quintessential late-nineteenth-century subject, echoing Carrà's distinctive mannequins in style, while its robust and elongated forms pay homage to the grand figures of 19th-century poetry.
