The dramatic explosion of a type Ia supernova
sketchfab
The model showcases a stunning visual representation of a type Ia supernova, a massive explosion that marks the end of a white dwarf star's life cycle. A massive ball of incandescent stellar debris erupts into the interstellar medium at blistering speeds, topping out at tens of thousands of kilometers per second. The extreme heat generated by this cataclysmic event scorches temperatures to a scorching several dozen million degrees Fahrenheit. To facilitate easy inspection of the supernova remnant's inner workings, the stellar debris is carefully clipped for maximum visibility. This captivating scene was rendered using the FLASH code, a state-of-the-art magnetohydrodynamic simulation tool. The research behind this visual masterpiece can be found in Orlando et al.'s 2012 publication in the Astrophysical Journal (Vol. 749, Issue 1).
