The Deer gun or Dear gun, a successor to the Liberator pistol, was developed by the CIA. The single-shot Deer gun was designed for South Vietnamese guerillas as a weapon against North Vietnamese soldiers invading the South. Design The Deer gun features a cast aluminum body with the receiver formed into a cylinder at the top of the weapon. A striker protrudes from the rear of the receiver and is cocked to fire, secured by a plastic clip to prevent accidental discharge. The grip is hollow, holding three 9 mm rounds along with a rod for clearing spent cases. The Deer gun lacks any manufacturer or user markings to prevent tracing, shipped in an unmarked polystyrene box containing operation pictures and three 9 mm rounds. Operation Loading the Deer gun involves removing the barrel and placing a 9 mm cartridge in the chamber. The striker is then cocked, secured by a plastic clip to impede forward motion and prevent accidental discharge. The barrel is screwed back onto the receiver. Firing requires removing the plastic clip, using it as a sight on the barrel, and pulling the trigger. The user would then seize the victim's equipment if possible and flee. Reloading involves unscrewing the barrel, ejecting the spent case with a provided rod, and following the outlined procedure. Fate A 1964 production run of 1,000 Deer guns was made at an estimated cost of $3.95 per gun. Unfortunately, the predicted scenario did not occur. Instead of a small clandestine war, the Vietnam War escalated into a full-scale conflict where the Deer gun's utility was compromised. Some Deer guns were evaluated in Vietnam, but their ultimate fate remains unknown. Sources have suggested that all were destroyed, yet some have been discovered on occasion. Conclusion After testing The Deer Gun & The FP-45, I will list the pros and cons of both designs from my perspective, as an observer who has not fired live ammunition through them. Deer Gun Pros: Easy to design (completed in 2 hours) Quick assembly time (under 5 minutes) Extremely simple design More accurate than the FP-45 due to its rifled barrel Cons: No trigger guard (raising safety concerns) Loading is twice as slow as the FP-45 Carries only three rounds of ammunition Lacks sights Aesthetically unappealing FP-45 https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3060548 Pros: Good design overall Fast reloading time Carries ten rounds Can be safely carried with a round in the chamber Features iron sights Attractive appearance Cons: Too complex (many parts) Difficult to assemble, one of the most challenging experiences I've had Tends to pinch the hand after firing (as seen in the firing video) In summary, both designs have their unique aspects, and I appreciate them individually.
