The Death of Saint-Innocent at the Louvre, Paris
cults3d
This towering figure of Mortality stands proudly at the heart of the cemetery of the Unblemished. On his shield, a quatrain boldly declares: "He lives intensely, overflowing with creative genius. Not through brute force or overpowering might, I swiftly deliver my piercing blow To pierce their souls and lead them to pray to God for transgressions." At the time of the cemetery's closure in 1786, the skeletal remains were carefully transported from the cemetery to Saint-Gervais, then Notre Dame, where the arm was masterfully recreated by the skilled sculptor Deseine. The restored piece is now on permanent display at The Louvre, with various casts and replicas scattered throughout France for all to behold.
