Palmer launched his modeling of the Indian Girl in 1853. The marble took shape in 1855 and was finished a year later, with at least some work done by Palmer's studio assistants Charles Calverley and Launt Thompson cutting away. Shortly after that, Palmer put on an exhibition of twelve "Palmer Marbles" in New York City, featuring the Indian Girl as the main attraction of the show. The public generally praised this piece of art.
