Here are some results of the project "The Daunian Stele Maker". Our School, "Ic. Foscolo Gabelli - Foggia", has emerged as a winner of the contest "Ultimaker Education Challenge". We have set out to achieve several learning goals through this project, including customization logics, dialogue with ancient local history, learning by doing, and understanding how fluid extrusion works, all while emphasizing team working. This is how our educational project works. Each student creates their own personal "Daunian Stele" Keychain. The Daunia stele is an ancient limestone artifact that originated from the pre-roman Illyric people of Northern Puglia during the 8th century BC to the 6th century BC. The stele consists of a parallelepiped-shaped plate, which protrudes from the upper head and features decorations on all four sides. These decorations are intricately carved with more or less deep incision, representing the life of one person in the clan. The decorations include dress representations, ornaments, and abstract figurative designs. For example, the stele of warriors often feature processions of chariots or fight scenes, which were interpreted as funeral games in honor of the deceased, or hunting scenes and battles, sometimes showing warriors with helmets or masks in the form of bucraniums with three horns. The daunian stele is essentially a book of comic strips incised on stone. These ancient artifacts narrate the life and adventures of the represented character. Our idea is to create modern 3D printed stelae, customized keychains where students describe their own lives and interests. The stele and the customized incisions can be carved using free digital modeling programs like Thinkercad or Sculptris. Then, the student learns to print their personal stele with Ultimaker 2+.
