Ferdinand Opitz (1885 Prague - 1956 Vienna) was a renowned sculptor of the 20th century's first half. He studied under J.V. Myslbek at the prestigious Prague Academy, where he honed his craft. In 1906-1909, receiving an academic scholarship, Opitz embarked on an extensive journey to Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and other destinations including Sicily, Egypt, Paris, and London. By 1909, he had settled in Vienna, calling it home for the remainder of his life. During World War I (1914-1918), Opitz served with honor in the Austrian Army. In 1922, he became a member of the esteemed "Wiener Kuenstlerhaus," where he consistently received high awards as an exponent. By 1933, Opitz had earned the distinguished title of professor, and from 1938 onward, he taught his own sculpture course at the Vienna School of Applied Arts. His works can be seen at the Modern Gallery in Prague, the Museum of the City of Vienna, and other notable institutions. As a versatile artist, Opitz primarily created architectural panels, wall decorations, and monuments. However, he also worked with various media such as wood, stone, silver, porcelain, and terracotta to produce intricate small figures.
