The ancient copper vessel. The Staroselsky cemetery, 13th-14th centuries. This artifact stands at the heart of traditional village life in Tatarskoe (Nizhniy Novgorod oblast). For more information, visit https://vk.com/vetarchexpedition. This cauldron is a unique example of funerary ware from medieval Mordovian tribes. Its squat shape and iron lugs and handle set it apart. Most copper cauldrons of this type date back to the Golden Horde era. The craftsmanship of this vessel, however, suggests that it was created by a local teryukhan artisan.
