The Cloud - Wall Lamp for Children

Overview:

I had the idea to build a cloud shaped lamp, powered by led strips and an ESP8266, running the amazing WLED software.

When you use Node Red as your smart home brain, you can utilize the great posibilities with MQTT, WLED and LEDs ;-)

I had this floating cloud in mind so I designed in Fusion 360 this print

Instructions :

Print the 4 cloud “layers”

Use a table saw or circular saw so get yourself

1 Leg (21x21 mm) (For mounting the cloud layers)

→ If your cloud layers aren't sturdy enough, print yourself 0,8mm thick spacers and fit them between the wood and the print

1 Base (100x100 mm, 18mm thick)
Mark the middle of your base and your leg, drill a hole with 3-4 mm through the base to mount the leg to the base.

Print the electronic box

drill 4 holes in the back side of the base for the electronic box (2mm diameter) and 3 holes for your LED wires (see picture)

Buy 5+ meters of rubber band, 1mm diameter thick and work out a pattern for yourself. I always left one hole empty and jumped to the next one back and forth to create a zig zag pattern.

Use any cotton you like - I used cosmetic cotton and teared the layers apart to create some fluffiness.

BEWARE THAT THIST TYPE OF COTTON IS EXTREMELY FLAMABLE!
TRIPPLE CHECK YOUR CONNECTIONS SO NOTHING IS EXPOSED!

Notes:

The ESP8266 is fitting quite well into the electronix box, I used hot glue for fix it permanently.
You just have to wire everything before mounting it to the base, otherwise plugging in the USB cable will we quite challanging ;-)

I sanded the wood down and oiled it so it has a nicer look - extra steps but worth taking.

As stated above, make sure your soldering points are well made and not exposed. I used hot glue to cover all soldering points. I don't take any responsibility for burning down your house ;-)

In my build, the biggest cloud is bending forward because of the rubber band. I don't mind it so much because you really don't notice it, you don't take a look from the side.
If you don't like this to happen, just print the “nose” twice and mount it right next to the base as a 5th layer. Just make sure it's really tight there so it holds up against the force of the rubber band.

Like the design?

You can tip me a coffee @ paypal.me/quintz :-)
